Abstract
During his four years at the Cape of Good Hope in the mid-1830s, Sir J ohn Herschel became very involved in a major scheme to restructure the fragmented and largely ineffectual education system of the Colony. Th e result was the establishment, soon after his departure in 1838, of o ne of the earliest and best structured state education systems in the world.
