The crystal structure of [Cu(sulfathiazole)(2)(EtOH)Cl-2] (triclinic;
a = 7.82(1), b = 11.441(3), c = 16.606(6) Angstrom A, alpha = 109.68(4
), beta = 102.24(4), gamma = 91.27(4)degrees, Z = 2, space group P $($
) over bar$$ 1) has been determined from the intensities of 2605 indep
endent reflections (graphite monochromator MoK alpha; 4-circle diffrac
tometer; R = 4.5%). The coordination polyhedron around Cu(II) ion is i
ntermediate between square pyramid and trigonal bipyramid. The spectro
scopic data and the rhombic powder EPR spectrum are in agreement with
the distorted geometry of the Cu(II) ion. The superoxide dismutase act
ivity of the title compound has been measured and compared with those
of the free drug and other sulfathiazole complexes.
