Jm. Hickmann et al., 2-PHOTON-RESONANT PHOTOINDUCED 2ND-HARMONIC GENERATION IN ER3-DOPED GERMANO-ALUMINOSILICATE OPTICAL FIBERS PUMPED AT 1.319-MU-M(), Optics letters, 19(21), 1994, pp. 1726-1728
The growth of a two-photon-resonant photoinduced second-harmonic signa
l at 660 nm in Er3+-doped GeO2-Al2O3SiO2 single-mode optical fibers pu
mped by a Nd:YAG laser at 1.319 mu m is reported. Defect states in the
band gap are optically excited through a resonant two-photon absorpti
on process connecting the I-4(15/2)-F-4(9/2) energy levels of the erbi
um ions present in the fiber core. As a result a periodic chi((2)) gra
ting is formed, and efficient second-harmonic generation takes place.
For erbium-free GeO2-doped silica test fibers no second-harmonic signa
l has been detected, even after hours of seeded preparation process.
