Abstract
Despite the fact that the snap-through process of stability loss of no n-linear elastic systems was discovered theoretically a relatively lon g time ago, its physical explanation is even today usually based on a very naive approach valid de facto only for systems of a unique degree of freedom. This approach as a rule leads to erroneous conclusions fo r real continuous systems. In the present work, the ways of snap-throu gh stability loss of geometrically non-linear real continuous systems and some new problems which arise in connection with this problem are investigated. At the end of the article is considered a paradox genera ted by the frequently used engineering approach based on refusal of co ntinuity of a real non-linear system.
