The crystal and molecular structure of sorbic acid [(E,E)-2,4-hexadien
oic acid], C6H8O2, has been determined. There appears to be no delocal
ization of the C(sp2)-C(sp2) bonds, arranged in an E,E configuration,
which have lengths of 1.328 (2) and 1.335 (2) angstrom (double) and 1.
442 (2)-1.487 (2) angstrom (single). Dimers are formed in the crystal
with an intermolecular O...O separation of 2.632 (2) angstrom; O-H 0.9
9 (2), H...O 1.65 (2) angstrom, O-H...O 174 (2)-degrees.
