Abstract
The homogeneous precipitation of calcium carbonate from sea water with different amounts of magnesium and sulphate ions has been studied. Th e magnesium ions strongly prevent pricipitation at high supersaturatio n but have no influence on the induction time period at low supersatur ation (pH < 8.7). The nucleation order is very close to 4 and it does not depend on magnesium concentration in solution. The major ions of s ea water can not inhibit the homogeneous precipitation of CaCO3 in the oceanic waters.
