The tellurium-rich compound [Re6Te14I14] (1) was obtained in high yiel
d by high-temperature reaction (400 degrees C) of the octahedral clust
er complex Re6Te15 with I-2 in a 1 : 9 ratio. Compound 1 is diamagneti
c, air-stable and insoluble in most common organic solvents. The struc
ture of 1 has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The
[Re6Te8(TeI2)(6)](2+) structure is characterized by the presence of t
he octahedral Re-6 cluster with Re-Re distances at 2.690(1)-2.700(1) A
ngstrom; the Re-mu(3)-Te distances are 2.689(1)-2.698(1) Angstrom. Eac
h Re atom is ligated by neutral TeI2 group. The Re-TeI2 distances are
2.670(1)-2.672(1) Angstrom. The Te-I distances in the TeI2 ligands ran
ge from 2.756(2) to 2.785(2) Angstrom. The I-Te-I bond angles are 89.2
9(5)-92.67(5)degrees and the Re-Te-I angles span 104.19(4) to 106.56(3
)degrees. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
