The complexes [ML(2)] (M = Cu and Ni) were prepared by electrochemical
oxidation of the appropriate metal in a solution of 2-(2-pyridyl)-N-t
osylethylamine in acetonitrile. The crystal and molecular structures o
f bis 2-pyridin-2-yl-ethyl)benzenesulfonamide}copper(II) and methyl-N-
(2-pyridin-2-yl-ethyl)benzenesulfonamide} nickel(II) were determined b
y X-ray diffraction. Both compounds are isotypical and crystallize in
the triclinic space group P1 with one molecule in the unit cell. In bo
th structures the metal atoms are in a distorted square-planar environ
ment defined by two amide and two pyridyl nitrogen atoms. (C) 1997 Els
