Abstract
The nitrate complexes of Pu(IV) are studied in solutions containing ni trate at concentrations up to 13 molar (M) using absorption spectrosco py, N-15 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and extended X-ray absorpti on fine structure (EXAFS). Four major nitrate complexes are observed a nd identified as PU(NO3)(3+), PU(NO3)(2)(2+), Pu(NO3)(4), and Pu(NO3)( 6)(2-). The Pu(NO3)(3)(1+) and Pu(NO3)(5)(1-) complexes are not observ ed here and an upper limit of 0.10 can be set on the fraction for each of these species.
