A new efficient procedure for the selective trimethylsilylation of rea
dily available tetrachlorocyclopropene is described. The electrochemic
al silylation gave the title compound 2 on a preparative scale in 78%
yield. Ionization of 2 to its corresponding cyclopropenium ion and its
functionalization by treatment with arenes is described. The properti
es of the title compound were also investigated.
