Abstract
In cutting dynamics, cutting stability is greatly dependent on the spe cific cutting force and its directional factors. However, the specific cutting force and its directional factors may vary with a change of c utting conditions. In this paper, a predictive machining theory based on a shear zone model of chip formation is used to predict the specifi c cutting force and its directional factors under the variation of cut ting conditions. It is found that a change of cutting speed, feed, and tool geometries will strongly influence the specific cutting force an d its directional factors in turning operations.
