The response of imperfect planar bi-material bonds to wave excitation
is considered in the time domain. Two semi-infinite linear elastic hom
ogeneous solids are bonded together to form an imperfect bond which is
modelled as a continuous distribution of infinitesimal nonlinear spri
ngs. At the macrolevel, the springs are characterized by average nonli
near and damping parameters. For oblique wave incidence the response i
s given as the solution to a nonlinear first order ordinary differenti
al equation. A parametric study is performed for different wave pulses
, angles of incidence, elastic solids, and nonlinear models. An analyt
ical solution is also presented for small nonlinearities.
