Adsorption of methanol on a partially hydroxylated zinc oxide (0001) s
urface was investigated using the waveguide surface coherent anti-Stok
es Raman spectroscopy. The adsorbate molecules are retained on the sur
face through the hydrogen bonding and can be removed from the surface
very easily. No evidence was found for the presence of surface bound m
ethoxide and, therefore, it is concluded that dissociative adsorption
of methanol does occur on a hydroxylated ZnO(0001) surface.
