Abstract
Curie-point pyrolyses of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) wood and i
ts lignin preparations were performed at 500 degrees C for 4 s. The re
sulting pyrolysates were analyzed by gas chromatography. The lignin pr
eparation methods greatly affected the product profiles and the total
yields of the pyrolysis products. All pyrograms of isolated lignins di
splayed a large peak of 4-methylguaiacol and a very small peak of tuan
s-coniferyl alcohol, but the most prominent peak on the sugi wood pyro
gram was trans-coniferyl alcohol. The total yields of pyrolysis produc
ts were ordered as follows: wood>a dehydrogenation polymer of conifery
l alcohol (DHP)>milled wood lignin> hydrochloric acid lignin> alcohol
bisulfite lignin> dioxane lignin> thiolignin>>Klason lignin. The total
yields of pyrolysis products were strongly dependent on the number of
condensed units in the lignins.
