Detectors are included in the analysis of Coriolis mass flowmeters wit
h straight vibrating pipe segments. The effect of the detector masses
is worked out on the one hand by perturbation methods supported by com
puter algebra and on the other by the finite element method. The predi
ctions of both methods agree almost perfectly. They show that care has
to be taken in choosing the position of the detectors, because this p
osition may have strong implications for the accuracy to which the cal
ibration of the instrument remains independent of the fluid density.
