Using scanned energy mode photoelectron diffraction we show that in th
e potassium-induced reconstruction of the Cu{110} surface the K atoms
occupy four-fold hollow sites formed by second layer Cu atoms. This sa
me site, which is the key to the reconstruction, is observed both at l
ow coverages, where the reconstruction is local in nature, and at cove
rages corresponding to the (1 X 3) and (1 X 2) missing row structures.
