We have succeeded in fabricating a two-dimensional photonic band struc
ture with a near-infrared band gap for p-polarization in a two-dimensi
onal Brillouin zone. The sample consists of circular air rods constitu
ting a triangular lattice with a lattice constant of 1.17 mu m and a b
ackground dielectric constant of 2.6. The transmission spectra were me
asured over a range from 1.4 to 5.0 mu m for both p- and s-polarizatio
ns. The energies of complete reflection regions observed in the Gamma-
X direction mere in good agreement with the theoretical calculation fo
r both p- and s-polarizations. This agreement indicates that the above
band gap should exist.
