Abstract
This paper deals with the characteristics of both the lightning echoes and sferics and the mechanisms to which they owe their origin. Result s obtained by using UHF band radar revealed that the length of the lig htning echoes is in a range of few kilometres to tens of kilometres an d the echo duration in most of the cases is greater than 200 m s. The duration of the sferic strokes is found to be less-than-or-equal-to 10 00 mus and the field is 1.5 x 10(-4) V/m when normalized to a range of one mile for a band width of 1 kHz.
