D. Shilkrut, ABOUT THE WAYS OF STABILITY LOSS BY SNAP-THROUGH OF GEOMETRICALLY NONLINEAR SHELLS (SYSTEMS) AND SOME RELATED PROBLEMS, International journal of non-linear mechanics, 29(5), 1994, pp. 671-686
Despite the fact that the snap-through process of stability loss of no
n-linear elastic systems was discovered theoretically a relatively lon
g time ago, its physical explanation is even today usually based on a
very naive approach valid de facto only for systems of a unique degree
of freedom. This approach as a rule leads to erroneous conclusions fo
r real continuous systems. In the present work, the ways of snap-throu
gh stability loss of geometrically non-linear real continuous systems
and some new problems which arise in connection with this problem are
investigated. At the end of the article is considered a paradox genera
ted by the frequently used engineering approach based on refusal of co
ntinuity of a real non-linear system.
