Conversion at low temperature of double labeled butane, (CH3CH2CH2CH3)
-C-13-C-13, over sulfated zirconium dioxide modified with iron and man
ganese ions, leads to isobutanes containing zero, one, two, three and
four C-13 atoms in abundances corresponding to a binomial distribution
. Isomerization over this catalyst apparently involves oligomerization
and beta-fission of a chemisorbed C-8-carbenium ion to iso-C-4 fragme
nts.
