Os. Pokrovsky et Vs. Savenko, THE ROLE OF MAGNESIUM DURING THE PROCESS OF HOMOGENEOUS PRECIPITATIONOF CALCIUM BICARBONATE FROM SEA-WATER, Okeanologia, 34(4), 1994, pp. 546-551
The homogeneous precipitation of calcium carbonate from sea water with
different amounts of magnesium and sulphate ions has been studied. Th
e magnesium ions strongly prevent pricipitation at high supersaturatio
n but have no influence on the induction time period at low supersatur
ation (pH < 8.7). The nucleation order is very close to 4 and it does
not depend on magnesium concentration in solution. The major ions of s
ea water can not inhibit the homogeneous precipitation of CaCO3 in the
oceanic waters.
