Abstract
A new potential-flow representation, which defines the velocity field del phi in a potential flow region explicitly in terms of the velocity distribution (u,v,w) at a boundary surface Sigma, is given for the ca se of wave diffraction-radiation by a ship. This flow representation d oes not involve the potential phi at Sigma (unlike the usual Green ide ntity which expresses phi within a flow domain in terms of boundary va lues of phi and partial derivative phi/partial derivative n) and defin es the velocity field del phi directly (i.e., not via numerical differ entiation of phi). The new flow representation can be useful for exten ding a given near-field flow into the far field, and for coupling a ne ar-field nonlinear viscous flow calculation method and a far-field lin ear potential-flow representation.
