A prevalence survey on 1 500 bovine carcasses in Djibouti slaughter-ho
use did not reveal any macroscopic lesion of tuberculosis. Thirteen an
imals (0.86 %) showed hydatic cysts and 17 cases of muscular cysticerc
osis were detected (1.13 %). From 2 500 small ruminants carcasses, 23
hydatic (0.92 %) and 2 Cysticercus ovis cases were detected. Four hund
red and ninety nine sera sampled from cattle in the area revealed prev
alences of 4.0 % for brucellosis, 1.0 % for chlamydiosis and for Q-fev
er, 4.45 % for hydatidosis, and 2.8 % for toxoplasmosis. No positive r
eactions were detected for Rift Valley Fever or Crimean-Congo Hemorrha
gic Fever. The same serologic tests were applied to 1 081 sera from sm
all ruminants and revealed a prevalence of 2.6 % for brucellosis (shee
p: 1.0 %, goats : 4.0 %), 0.1 % for chlamydiosis (respectively 0.2 % a
nd 0 %), 7.0 % for Q-fever (resp. 3.5 % and 10.6 %), 0.5 % for Rift Va
lley Fever (0.4 % and 0.7 %) and 0.8 % for Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic F
ever (0.8 % and 0.9 %). Hydatidosis was serologically detected in 12.0
% of sheep and 9.6 % of goats, as well as toxoplasmosis (respectively
9.8 % and 6.4 %).
