SIMPLE AND RAPID SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF SOME AROMATIC-ALDEHYDES - A KINETIC-STUDY

The condensation reaction of barbituric acid with benzaldehyde and som e substituted benzaldehydes in ethanolic medium have been investigated spectrophotometrically at 25-40 degrees C. The reaction proceeded kin etically as a pseduo-first-order reaction, The activation parameters o f the reaction were determined and Delta S was found to be a linear f unction of Delta H which points to the occurrance of the same mechani sm for the tested aromatic benzaldehydes, The rate determining step in volves dehydration of the aldol formation. Based on this reaction, det ermination of seven aromatic aldehydes in a concentration range of 10( -6)-5 x 10(-4)M have been proposed.
