X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to examine the surface
s of vacuum-fractured lithium borate glasses with composition of xLi2O
-(1 - x)B2O3 for x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 and the vapor-deposited thin
-film LiBO2. Binding energies for the Li 1s, B 1s and O 1s peaks have
been determined, referenced to the Au 4f7/2 peak of a thin gold overla
yer. The Li/LiBO2 interface was investigated by a sequence of depositi
ons of lithium onto a LiBO2 surface followed by in situ XPS scans. Obs
erved changes in XPS spectra of the interface region provide evidence
of compositional and structural changes within the lithium borate film
as a result of the lithium deposition.
