It is proposed here that the relative solvent strength relationship mo
ly be transferable between similar columns (e.g., C-18 packing). The t
ransfer between columns may be realized by using a ''key set'' solvent
-projection matrix derived from measurements on one column and measure
ments for compounds in a key solvent set on each new column. This hypo
thesis is tested from water/methanol/acetonitrile solvent systems usin
g data collected on three different C-18 reversed-phase columns. The a
verage crossing prediction errors, ranging from 2% to 5% based on capa
city factor, are obtained for various combinations of key solvent and
prediction sets.
