Abstract
The evolution of data communications, mobile communications and VOD is demanding higher capacity transmission systems. The optical fibre net work has already seen tremendous deployment and ways must be found to overcome the physical limitations of attenuation chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion to achieve ultrahigh bit rates. The a rticle discusses new transmission schemes, including time and waveleng th division multiplexing techniques and the soliton effect.
