Abstract
The paper presents the identification of a volcanic ash-fall inside th e Upper Pleistocene sediment filling of the Moula rock-shelter (Soyons Karst, Ardeche, France). Composed of minerals from the basement rocks , basaltic clasts, mantle and basaltic minerals, it has been produced by an important phreatomagmatic eruption located in the Vivarais regio n. As the site was more than 50 km away from the supposed emission poi nt, the dispersion was exceptional, with regard to the type of tephra. This tephra layer must now be regarded as a fundamental stratigraphic mark in the regional sequence of Upper Quaternary.
