Abstract
It is demonstrated how the complexities of graphite shapes and distrib utions in cast irons can be described by fractal geometry. A selection of typical graphite morphologies, flake-like and spherulitic, is desc ribed unambiguously by two numbers, a shape factor, a, and fractal exp onent, D. The meaning of these numbers is discussed and their possible correlations with growth kinetics and mechanical properties are brief ly explored.
