Abstract
A procedure for the development of alfalfa (Medicago falcata L.) somat ic embryos to the torpedo stage in airlift vessels is described. Embry os were initiated from chopped leaf explants and were formed by direct somatic embryogensis. The system produced a high number of torpedo st age embryos. The effect of various inoculation densities on embryo dev elopment was studied. A procedure for the development and maturation o f embryos in aerated liquid media was established. The rate of convers ion of the torpedo stage embryos formed in the vessels was 83%.
