Gaf. Hendry, OXYGEN AND ENVIRONMENTAL-STRESS IN PLANTS - AN EVOLUTIONARY CONTEXT, Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Section B: Biological sciences, 102, 1994, pp. 155-165
Contemporary plant species show a wide range of responses to oxidative
attack. Much of this variation may reflect the different environmenta
l selective pressures operating at different geological periods over t
he course of angiosperm evolution. Evidence is provided to show that t
he wide range of contemporary responses to oxidative stress may direct
ly reflect the persistence of genes controlling free radical processes
under environments of the past.
