A method for producing ultrashort high-power uv pulses by pulse compre
ssion in a multipass excimer amplifier with a saturable absorber is pr
oposed and investigated numerically for a KrF ring amplifier. It is sh
own that for input pulses of duration from 10(-11)s to 10(-9)s the pul
se compression greater than or equal to 10(2) is attainable already af
ter 3 to 4 passes through the amplifier. The pulse compression can be
accompanied by considerable increase of power and contrast ratio of th
e pulse.
