Abstract
The genetic manipulation of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) necessitates a re liable and efficient, genotype-independent method of transformation. T hirteen lettuce cultivars have been assessed for their amenability to Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer linked to their tissue culture re sponsiveness, including callus induction and shoot regeneration. A rel iable protocol has been developed for the routine production of transg enic plants for all 13 cultivars investigated.
