TRIDENTATOLS-A-C, NOVEL NATURAL-PRODUCTS OF THE MARINE HYDROID TRIDENTATA-MARGINATA

Three novel phenolic metabolites, tridentatols A-C (1-3), with-an unco mmon sulfur-containing functional group have been isolated from the ma rine hydroid Tridentata marginata. The structures of the compounds wer e determined by interpretation of spectral data and a single crystal X -ray diffraction study on tridentatol C. Ecological studies showed tha t tridentatol A deters feeding by a common hydroid predator. These met abolites also may function to protect T. marginata from damaging solar ultraviolet radiation.
