Using algorithms from computer graphics, i.e. hidden line and surface
removal algorithms, techniques have been constructed to derive the 3-a
xis visible or millable set of a computer model from a given orientati
on, or simulate and verify machining toolpaths. In the paper, an appro
ach that reduces the accessibility problem of 5-axis milling using a f
lat end tool to a 3-axis accessibility problem is discussed. Using thi
s approach, global detection of possible gouging of other parts while
a 5-axis flat endmill is in use is made feasible, and collisions can b
e avoided.
