Abstract
The dynamics of impact Charpy specimen is analyzed using a finite elem ent model. By introduction of a spring to represent the contact deform ations at the support and by inclusion of a gap element, the model acc ounts for the effects of support reactions, specimen loss-of-contact w ith the anvil and influence of beam overhangs. Two approaches are inve stigated with the basic model; measured tup force is applied as input to predict the dynamic SIF in the first approach and the tup load itse lf is predicted using load-point displacement in the second. The model is validated by comparison with the experimental results published by Bohme and Kalthoff [1].
