Abstract
The Dutch Programme on Soil Ecology of Arable Farming Systems is evalu ated in terms of scientific results, feasibility of integrated arable farming and future research needs. It is concluded that the knowledge obtained on the role of the soil biota in the functioning of the soil- crop ecosystem is a prerequisite for the further development of reduce d-input farming systems. This knowledge should be integrated with expe rimental and modelling studies on soil organic matter dynamics and cro p growth.
