This discussion uses the evidence adduced in the current issue's sympo
sium on autobiographical narrative to examine the feasibility of the s
tandard division of narrative from paradigmatic thought. It is suggest
ed, first, that there is no evidence to support the assertion that rep
resentations of narrative information do not give rise spontaneously t
o generalizations and, second, that narratives often serve a formal, l
ogical role in the management of life goals.
