Kinetics of the oxidation of maleic acid with hydrogen peroixide has b
een studied in aqueous acidic medium in the presence of Na3VO4 acting
as a catalyst, at 40-degrees-C. The rate of the reaction is first orde
r with respect to [Maleic acid] and [Na3VO4] but independent of [H2O2]
. The oxidation rate is pH dependent. Change in ionic strength of the
medium shows no effect on the reaction rate. Various activation parame
ters have been computed and a probable reaction mechanism satisfying t
he various kinetic parameters have been proposed.
