Abstract
As part of our program for better characterizing a lower melting elect rolyte suitable for operation around 940-degrees-C, the influence of M gF2 additions on some physico-chemical properties of interest in alumi nium electrolysis was investigated. The density, viscosity, electrical conductivity and volatility were determined as a function of temperat ure and MgF2 content in a cryolite base electrolyte of CR = 2.35 with 2.5 wt % Al2O3 and 5% CaF2. The liquidus temperature at different MgF2 contents was also established. A comparison with the results obtained for LiF additions 1 indicated a mutual compensation of their influenc e.
