This paper describes future directions for research in drug abuse prev
ention from six perspectives that are relevant to NIH: integrated dema
nd and supply reduction, strategic prevention that addresses whole pop
ulations and high risk groups, comprehensive or extended prevention th
at includes multiple channels and periods for intervention delivery, t
echnology transfer, prevention research methods development, and final
ly, the overarching perspective of interfacing basic and social scienc
e research approaches. Specific research questions are summarized that
