Three cases of ketonaemia in pregnant bitches are described, where the
principal clinical signs were neurological changes and vomiting. Diag
nosis was based on history, clinical signs, serum biochemistry and res
ponse to treatment. All cases were treated with intravenous (IV) dextr
ose therapy and showed a rapid response. It is suggested the condition
is under-diagnosed and should be included in the differential diagnos
is of periparturient bitches presenting with neurological and gastroin
testinal signs.
