Abstract
A modification of the Gewald reaction is presented, which renders 4-n- alkyl substituted 2-aminothiophene derivatives 9 accessible, which bea r no substituent at position 5. The three step procedure involves mono tosylation of diols 2, oxidation of the secondary hydroxy group to yie ld 6 and one-pot reaction to yield the title compounds.
