Photolysis of Cp(2)MoH(2) in the presence of thiophene leads to the fo
rmation of the C-H insertion product Cp(2)Mo(2-thienyl)H as the sole p
roduct, which was characterized by conversion to the chloro derivative
Cp(2)Mo(2-thienyl)Cl. Photolysis of Cp(2)WH(2) in the presence of thi
ophene leads to the initial formation of the C-S insertion product Cp(
2)WSCH=CHCH=CH. Continued irradiation results in the conversion of thi
s adduct to the C-H insertion product Cp(2)W(2-thienyl)H. Thermal reac
tion of Cp(2)W(CH3)H with thiophene gives both C-S and C-H insertion p
roducts in an 11:1 kinetic ratio. The complex Cp(2)WSCH=CHCH=CH crysta
llizes in orthorhombic space group Pbca (No. 61) with a = 7.713(6)Angs
trom b = 13.636(5) Angstrom, c = 22.290(7) Angstrom, V = 2344.4(3.3) A
ngstrom(3), Z = 8.
