Abstract
Plasma substrate regulation is outlined in healthy mothers and compare d with changes observed in diabetes. Placental exchange of glucose, am ino acids and lipids are briefly outlined and regulation by maternal a nd placental hormones discussed. Fetal adaptation to excess and reduce d nutrient supply are shown and fetal hormonal responses described. Ex amples of how maternal health can affect the offspring in postnatal li fe are given.
