Mycoplasma-like organisms (MLOs) were detected and characterized by RF LP analysis in declining trees of Alnus glutinosa and A. cordata in So uthern Italy for the first time. The infected trees showed symptoms of yellowing, sparse foliage, premature autumn colouration, sprouting, d eliquescent branching, phloem necrosis, dieback and witches' brooms.
