Abstract
A transfer matrix method is introduced here and it is demonstrated to be generally applicable for the calculation of the thermo-elastic resp onse of one dimensional structures exposed to transient laser heating. The method enables the modelling of photothermal measurements of many practically important samples such as multi-layers and materials with continously varying thermal and/or elastic properties. Examples for i ts possible applications are given.
