Pa. Schwantes et al., EFFECTIVENESS AND ACCEPTANCE OF A TROSPIU M CHLORIDE TREATMENT FOR PATIENTS WITH URGE INCONTINENCE, Acta therapeutica, 20(3-4), 1994, pp. 133-150
Study objective: Assessment of the therapeutic efficacy, tolerability
and acceptance of trospium chloride in the treatment of outpatients su
ffering from urge incontinence. Study design: Prospective PMS study un
der section 67 section 6 AMG, performed by 645 physicians on 3,166 pat
ients under routine conditions; observation period planned: 28 days; m
inimum treatment period: 10 days; dosage recommendation registered is
3 x 1 tablet/day (each containing 15 mg). Patients: Data from 2,647 pa
tients (1,950 women, 694 men; mean age 63 years) were suitable for sta
tistical analysis. Main results: Obvious improvement in severity of ur
ge symptomatology in 87.3% of all patients; reduction of daily micturi
tion frequency by 39.7%; urinary incontinence was obviously decreased
in that the number of patients showing urinary continence at the end o
f the study was considerably increased under medication with trospium
chloride. Therapeutic efficacy of the drug was assessed as being good
or very good by 87% of physicains and 84.8% of patients; tolerability
was considered good or very good in 97.8% and 95.8% repectively. A tot
al of 28 instances of suspected adverse effects was reported. Conclusi
on: Good efficacy of trospium chloride in the treatment of patients wi
th urge incontinence, good tolerability, low rate of adverse effects,
high acceptance.
