The quantum mechanical theory of Feshbach, Kerman and Koonin has been
applied to analyse neutron-induced reactions, particularly nucleon-emi
ssion reactions at 14.1 MeV on V-51, Fe-56, Zr, Nb-93, Mo, and Sb. The
analysis is carried out over the whole energy and angle range and aim
s to account for all the reaction flux. An unambiguous method of isola
ting the multistep direct component by taking the forward-backward dif
ferences in the centre-of-mass system has been developed and used to o
btain the average value for the strength V0 of the effective N-N inter
action. This method has been applied to a wider range of nuclei in ord
er to find the dependence of V0 on the target mass number.
