Abstract
Lasing in the ultraviolet has been observed in neodymium-doped fluoroz irconate glass (ZBLAN) fibres at room temperature. For a cavity output coupling of < 0.1%, 74 mu W of power was obtained at 381nm (D-4(3/2) --> I-4(11/2) transition of Nd3+) when a 45cm long fibre was pumped wi th 275mW at a wavelength of nominally 590nm.
